In the 1970s and 1980s the New Zealand government and Greenpeace wanted to stop France testing nuclear bombs on the Pacific island of Mururoa Atoll. They also wanted to stop American nuclear warships visiting New Zealand. People were worried about nuclear poisons in the Pacific Ocean and nuclear accidents in our harbours.
Many protest yachts sailed to up Mururoa and right into the test sites. French sailors attacked the yachts, beating up the protestors and putting some of them in jail, France kept on testing and contaminating (poisoning) the water. In February 1985, the government banned American warship visits.
